Wow this is so impressive, thanks for sharing the website Ozzie the Blade. I'm just looking at the images for The Northern War modification to Empire Total War. The unit artwork looks amazing. I wonder if the units can be edited slightly to show up on a diplomacy map.

I think if you figure out how to retreive the unit UI cards and take the pics from them then it maybe possible. Or you could just PM the modding team and explain your situation and they may let you use the unit skins/models. Other then that I wouldn't be able to say as I don't mod myself, I just enjoy playing them.

Ah, thanks. I think I'll send them a message in the near future. The detailed units would be a nice addition to a game of Diplomacy. But first, I guess, we'd need a Napoleonic map. There are a few in the [i]Variant Bank[/b] but I think they're hand-drawn, so they'll need some editing before they can be of use.

I'm not at all familiar with modding, so I have no idea how to try them out. I'm just looking at some modifications for AOE III at the moment and they seem pretty interesting.

I'm guessing that modding edits the game data (because the instructions are telling me to back up some game files...just in case) But does it edit the game disc in anyway? As in, if something goes wrong with the mod, can I just uninstall the game and re-install it?

With some comments like "this mod ruined my computer" I'm a bit concerned with going ahead with any modifications.

So far as I know it can't - game discs are usually non-writeable whether on CD-Rom or DVD. However, it's possible that a really messy mod-problem could make re-installs a problem. I have a machine that can't use Firefox for some odd reason, following a dodgy Add-on (and I haven't figured out which one it was yet).

Well, I'd check any out a fair bit first myself. The one I keep meaning to look into is Rome:Total Realism for R:TW, as it has a lot of good chat surrounding it and it is supposed to be very well done.

I found some information about Rome Total Realism on the Total War forums. (I'm still not sure what the adaptations are) There is a post of some nice looking images by SnakeIV. I wonder if he's the same fellow as Redscape's SnakeIV

In regards to modding and mods in general for RTW and M-TW2. As long as you download from a legitimate site and follow the installation instructions to a 'T'. It is pretty difficult to stuff up your game files as most mods are what is referred to as mod foldered nowadays. Basically when it installs it creates a seperate folder for that particular mod, desktop icon ect ect which doesn't overwrite any of your original game files. Basically through coding/scripting ect ect it creates a link between the mod folder and your original game folder in order to link the game exe.file with the mod exe.file, or something along those lines... Meh it sounds good anyway.

As far as ETW goes, there are still very few modding tools around making it complex to not only mod but install mods because CA despite the Total War series having one of the largest modding communities on the internet, won't release modding tools for public use. So give it another 6 months or so and some decent modding tools will be available to modders and modding and the installation of should become alot more simplistic, until then I would steer clear of any ETW or NTW mods unless you completely understand what you are doing.

I finally got round to buying Empire:TW a few weeks ago, and I had some time off coming up (hernia op) to try it out. I was a bit worried that the land battles would be imbalanced by the total difference in unit types from previous games, but it seems to be pretty good on that.

The computer AI is, as always, a bit limited, but I tend to try and see what I can do with smaller forces rather than equal ones, as that's always a good challenge. Naval battles I'm still quite hazy with. Essentially it seems to be a case of using as much firepower as possible, which means it seems less time-consuming to simply let the game resolve rather than fight yourself.

The only thing about the campaigns is that they seem to be a bit rushed. My first game on the short campaign was simply a series of constant wars with little break between them as I had to take on four different powers to get the victory conditions (I played as Sweden, so you have to hold back Russia, destroy Denmark and take key provinces from both Prussia and Poland all in 50 years). It was a bit hard to keep up on all the economic side of things, upgrading all the farms and towns. Diplomacy was weird, but AIs are usually rubbish at that sort of thing.
