AH Civ Web App - Bringing new life to Adv Civ!

Hey Everyone. I'm new to the forums, but I wanted to post here to let you know what I've been working diligently on for the last 8 months or so.

I've been working on developing a web app of Advanced Civilization. I'm currently GMing my first beta-test game, and a second is about to start. I've leeched on this site during the planning stages and gathered some good ideas, as well as rules, etc. Now, it's time to give back.

I'm considering opening up to another beta test with people that I haven't personally played the board game with to get another perspective on things. I've already discovered a number of "house rules" that I had built into the game that I had to remove because they weren't in the official rules.

Note that this is still a work in progress, and the game is not completely done. In particular the automation of much of the calamities I'm still working on. BUT, it's done enough that we can start beta testing and working out the kinks.

Another current limitation is that the game only supports 8 players. No more, no less. Once all the kinks are worked out, I'll modify it to support the rulesets of 2-7 players, then after that (with their permission) the Advanced Civ Expansion Project.

So, if you are a dedicated Advanced Civ player, have an email address and a web browser, and are interested in playing, email me at "redscape AT rol-play DOT com". If enough are interested, we'll get another beta test game going.

This sounds pretty cool. I just thought of doing this on the way to work this morning. Putting the CivProject online with 4 hour based turns and online moves/trading entered prior to the turn...which leads to some questions...

What state is the game?
Did you get permission for this?
What kind of copyright issues are there?
Do you need help (a friend does silverlight/flash for a living, I do VB/C#, PHP, ASP, SQL)?

I think these "run in the background" games that you can dink with at work/evening for a few minutes and let it go are a good idea. Its a fantasy football game for civ dudes (& dudettes). Logon and see what happened last turn, enter your moves and trade options, at 12pm/4pm/8pm/12pm the server transacts all actions and emails the results. You can robot your moves if you don't enter any.

Friend invites. Game size control. Limits. Piece options. Visibility of game layout (fog of war). Card options. Randomization of city/pop limits. Swapping barbarians into civs when one dies. Civil Wars - trade out the weakest player civ for the other half of this new civ [someone just got lucky].

This could just as well work for Diplomacy.

Sorry I am on caffiene this morning and the buzz is strong! And I don't have much interesting to work on either.

I have opened the site up for non-beta testers. The site is still kinda in beta, however, as there are still a few lingering bugs and features that I want to put in, but it is functionally playable. Please visit http://civ.rol-play.com, sign up for an account, and join a game! The easiest way to do that is to add yourself to the player queue on the right hand side of the page (after you log in) and once the game is full a game will automatically be created.

To answer some of the questions:

What state is the game in?: The game is functionally complete for a 6 to 8 player game using the entire map including the Western Expansion. I have plans to provide smaller maps for smaller games, but that's not done yet. You can invite friends to play, or you can just add yourself to the queue and join in a random game. All communication is currently done via email, but all orders and trades are issued (and thus maintained) via the site.

Did you get permission for this? What kind of copyright issues are there? : Well, I tried. My inqueries were never responded to. I'm not making any money on this (and you aren't being charged for it either), so if someone from Avalon Hill (or, more correctly these days, Hasbro) were to contact me, then we could talk. But, it's pretty much just a hobby.

I'm not a lawyer. However, I was a huge fan of Avalon Hill. I cut my gaming teeth on their games.

Basically, Avalon Hill lost a legal dispute with Microprose when the latter bought Francis Tresham's design rights. The legal fees pushed a family-owned business (Avalon Hill was a printing company) over a cliff. So, strangely, Sid Meier is sort of responsible for the death of the board game.
